These warriors can fight competently, both at range and in close combat and form a flexible infantry backbone for the Sabaean forces.

Description[]

When the Sabaean state goes to war, it doesn't rely solely on its townsfolk for its defence. From the surrounding tribes come stout warriors, experienced and hardy in combat. Though they cannot match the Khamis in training and discipline, they often form the main force of Sabaean armies in the field and their panoply of bows, swords and shields makes them a flexible backbone of infantry, capable both at range and in a melee.

The Sabaean army consisted of five main elements: the communes, mansha', the urban levies or qadub, Arab and Bedouin mercenaries called 'ashab, professional soldiers or khamis and in the late period a small mounted force: the 'afrs. These men represent the first part of the Sabaean army. Before starting a campaign, the malek called his land lords, the qayls, to arms and they in turn mobilized their own vassals. These vassal armies consisted mostly of poor farmers with cheap equipment and acted either as skirmishers or other types of light infantry. Nevertheless, the qayls also levied troops from the local warrior classes, mainly comprised of members of the leading clans and free men from the higher layers of society. These troops would be led by the qayls themselves and their equipment would have varied quite markedly both within and between tribes.
